Private Investigator as a Job?

Depending on the country, you can take up the profession as a private investigator. In countries like the United States of America (USA), for example, everyone can call themselves a private investigator. The industry is typically free of special diplomas or other restrictions by authorities. On the other hand, most countries do not give private investigators special permits before the law. However, an impeccable certificate of good conduct must be presented in Germany if you want to become a private investigator or start an investigator agency. In other countries, different regulations and possibilities apply here to become active as a private investigator.

We will present the specific rules for individual countries on separate pages on this website. In order to be successful as a private investigator, however, there are some requirements that you should meet for this job - no matter where in the world. It is primarily about knowledge, character, and also about flexibility.

Many former civil servants take up the profession

Incidentally, a characteristic that unites many private investigators around the world is that many of them have previously worked in government agencies and the executive branch. Of course, the police are a particularly strong source for the budding private investigator. Former police officers take up the profession particularly often when they no longer want to work in the state service.

For those who are seriously considering the job of a private investigator, there is of course literature to deal with it. In addition, in addition to the personal requirements, you should also bring some financial means with you, because surveillance and observation are often only feasible with expensive technical equipment. As a private investigator, you should plan several thousand euros for the start-up capital of the detective agency.

Do good private investigators have an office?

That is not at all certain. Of course, an office address brings a bit more seriousness to a private investigator, and especially if the investigaton agency has employed several detectives, then of course there are administrative activities that have to be carried out. Personal requirements for the profession of private investigators

A private investigator never actually has a classic "9 to 5" job, which is practically non-existent in this industry. The only possibility in this professional field to actually have very regular working hours is actually to work as a department store detective and to be responsible there for the prevention of shoplifting. Then usually the working hours are the opening times of the respective company. Otherwise, as a private investigator, you have to be absolutely ready to act very flexibly. The most important personal and character skills are the following.

  • Patience
  • Perseverance
  • General Knowledge
  • Flexibility
  • Willingness to Travel
  • Private Independence
  • Discipline

Flexibility and private independence as well as the willingness to travel actually belong together to one topic, because family life is actually hardly made possible for a private investigator.
